In May 2019 we updated our pricing to a new seat-based model with unlimited free viewer accounts. This means you only need to pay for people who are contributing or analyzing content in Dovetail and everyone else in your organization can view for free.
All new customers are on this seat-based pricing model. In an effort to simplify our billing infrastructure and revenue forecasting, we are also starting to reach out to existing customers in an effort to move everyone to seat-based pricing by the end of June 2019. Read on for more information on the benefits of our new pricing model and how you can seamlessly move with no interruption.
Visit the billing page to see what plan you’re on and how much you’re currently paying for Dovetail. There are six legacy plans that are being replaced by seat-based billing: Unlimited, Solo, Starter, Team, Business, and Enterprise. If you’re on one of these plans, you’ll need to move to seat-based pricing by 30 June 2019.
Our new pricing model is $25 USD / user / month with unlimited free viewer accounts. There’s a minimum of 5 users and a 20% discount for yearly payments. Check out our updated pricing page for more information.
Unlimited free viewers means that you only need to pay for people who are contributing or analyzing content in Dovetail. For most customers, this means that most of the people in your workspace no longer need to be paid Dovetail users – you can convert them from Admins or Users to Viewers and they’ll be free under the new model.
For example, if you have 10 researchers in a 200 person organization, you only need to pay for the 10 researchers and have 190 free viewer accounts. Previously, you would need to purchase 200 users to achieve this, which would cost a lot more.
We think seat-based pricing is more consistent with other cloud products, more scalable for large organizations, and more predictable for finance teams.
Free viewer accounts for the rest of the organization also matches how researchers typically interact with stakeholders. Now, researchers can securely share research and insights with everyone without needing to pick up the tab for the whole organization.
Building a startup is difficult, and getting pricing right is one of the hardest parts. As we’ve improved the product over the past two years, we’ve also adjusted the price to reflect new functionality while ‘grandfathering’ existing customers. This incremental approach has resulted in customers being on ~24 different plans and pricing models, which makes it difficult for us to maintain our billing infrastructure and forecast revenue growth.
Consolidating everyone onto one pricing model will enable us to spend more time on product features and less time fixing billing-related bugs caused by the complexity of needing to handle so many different plan variations.
Unfortunately you can’t stay on your current plan, but we will work with each customer to ensure minimal impact and a smooth transition. Our goal is to have all customers on our new seat-based model by 30 June 2019. We’re reaching out to customers one-by-one in advance to give you plenty of time to think about who will be users and viewers.
First, check that the right people are set as Admins, Users, and Viewers in user management. Then head to billing to move to the new seat-based pricing model and get unlimited free viewer accounts. You’ll have until 30 June 2019 to do this. After that date, we’ll carefully migrate remaining customers to the new model.
We’ll endeavor to keep your price change as small as possible while moving you to the new seat-based model based on your existing plan. At the end of your 12 month billing interval, you’ll need to renew for another 12 months at the new per-seat price.
