Format your notes and transcripts

Dovetail’s editor is a rich text ‘WYSIWYG’ editor similar to Confluence, Evernote, Microsoft Word, Notion, or Google Docs. It supports common formatting options like headings, bold text, italic text, blockquotes, bullet lists, numbered lists, tables, and more.

Our editor behaves more or less the same across the project readme, notes, tag descriptions, and insights. All of these support real-time collaborative editing, which means you can invite other people to work on the same document at the same time.

Basic formatting controls

You can choose to format your content in Dovetail with your mouse using the editor toolbar, or via keyboard shortcuts and quick actions as you type. You will need to have the correct access (Project access control), ensure the editable toggle switch is enabled, and make sure your cursor is inside the editor to be able to edit content.

Editor toolbar

Simply select some text with your cursor or keyboard and click one of the icons in the editor toolbar to apply formatting. For example, click B to make text bold.

Keyboard shortcuts

Most text formatting options have an equivalent keyboard shortcut. To see all the available shortcuts, click the Actions (···) menu in the top right of the project readme or a note, tag, or insight, then click Shortcuts.

Quick actions

Dovetail supports some Markdown-inspired quick actions to insert headings and format text inline. For example, ### followed by a space will insert a Heading 3, and 1. followed by a space will start a numbered list.

Insert images and other files

Our editor supports all file types from JPEGs to PDFs to ZIP files. Files can be inserted into notes through the editor toolbar, or by dragging and dropping files into the editor area on a note, tag description, insight, or the project readme.

To insert one or more files while in a note:

  1. Click the File icon in the editor toolbar.

  2. Choose one or more files from your computer.

Certain file types will have inline previews which will let you view or playback the file without needing to download it. These include:

  • Images – jpg, png, gif, svg, and more.

  • Audio files – mp3, wav, ogg, and more.

  • Videos – mp4, mov, and more.

If a file does not have an inline preview (e.g. PDF), you will need to open the file in your browser or download it to view its contents.

Insert, modify, and remove tables

Inline tables can be inserted into the editor. Just click the Table icon in the editor toolbar, then Insert table, or use the appropriate keyboard shortcut.

Edit with others in real-time

Bring your team together to collaboratively work on your notes, tags, and insights.

Dovetail’s editor supports real-time concurrent editing. If two or more people open the same note, tag, insight, or project readme, then all changes to the content will be synced in real-time between everyone in the session.

When new people join the session, their profile photo will appear in the top right of the header. You will also be able to see other people’s cursor positions.

Mention people to notify them

Type an @ in the editor to search Dovetail users who can be mentioned. Mentioning a user will send an email notifying them that they’ve been mentioned by you.

Switch up how you see feedback

Change the way you preview and explore feedback. Open up a note or feedback and click Switch panel in the top left to change between Side panel, Center panel and Full page views.

Use Side panel to make navigating between notes easy. Use Center panel and Full page to see notes in more detail.
